That happened to me also.
Some features at ba.com are not working well ... and the ba staff is aware of this!?
From 09/21 you can check in without executive-#. However, it works not by pressing the "check in" button.
Sometimes I can check in but not Mrs. USAFAN on the same e-tix.
And on 09/23 I could not check in (for 09/24) at all!
Also, after changing the seat assignment, ba.com still shows the old seats ... even after refresh or new sign-in. Checkmytrip.com shows the correct seat assignment...!
Conclusion: BA's IT department is not in a good shape ... you get only "canned" answers.
On the other hand: I like the BA FAs a lot. Mostly very friendly, helpful and professional. ^
If BA would be run like the IT department, I would not fly with BA any longer ....
