On a points booking you technically don't even need to cancel, as the no-show policy doesn't apply. (It's still a good idea to cancel though, as it eliminates them holding for and/or paging you.)
Also better to cancel a points booking in order to get taxes/fees back to original form of payment, instead of having them converted to travel funds with expiration.
