VA=Virgin Australia and VS=Virgin Atlantic. I assume you mean the latter. I have booked Delta online with VS points on VS website several times no problem but the VS website is idiosyncratic to put it mildly (and this was before all their recent IT issues). If you cannot book online (getting an error or whatever) yes you will probably have to call in.
