Seems as though the cash crunch created by Covid-19 has created some good thinking. Checking to see whether people intend to fly likely yields a better sense of inventory and thus how best to deal with an overbooking which might turn into an oversale.
I'm guessing that the algorithms that the airlines used for overbooking have been thrown out of whack recently.
Also the change fee waiver over the past few months is likely creating a bunch of speculative bookings. Probably a bunch of these out there that people no longer intend to fly, but are waiting for the last minute to cancel hoping for irrops as an opportunity to get their money back.
