Spent Sept 3-17th in France (Paris and Provence)- decent hotels - rented an apartment - nice-level restaurants (not starred, but very nice). Not one would take Amex. In the whole two weeks the only time I could have used it was for my Avis rental. Perhaps in a couple of the stores - but by then I was out of Amex mode.
Went to 2 nice restaurants that actually stated "Amex - leave home without it" on their menus.
We don't do high-end shopping - so YMMV - I would bet the stores on the Place Vendome would.
We ended off using a MCard for everything.
