I remember in the late 80s there was a huge backlash when Alaska proposed removing the Eskimo from the tail and replace it with some kind of stylized mountain.

I agree with AS Flyer—the Eskimo on the tail is just acknowledging the heritage of the home state much like the face on Hawaiian tails.
