UA is not great about getting cancellation notices out in a timely manner. And no, I would not be concerned it will impact the refund.

Changes are usually done over the weekend and take a couple of steps / days to settle out, you may have caught this just as it was happening.

"the flight still appeared on my United account.", where is it appearing?
