Trying to explain simply!

I think they have made this complicated and it doesn’t need to be. Have spoken to BA and trawled through loads of blogs, so 99.99% sure this is correct:
  1. Take your status on the day of the announcement - 11 June 2020.*
  2. This status will last you 12 further months than your current tier year & expiry date. If you already earned enough tier points for that to happen anyway, then you don’t really benefit.
  3. You need to start earning tier points from your next tier year end after 11 June 2020 to maintain status for the following year. Tier points earned before then could get you a status upgrade, but you are guaranteed not to drop, so if you're not likely to earn enough to get an upgrade to your status, they are essentially useless other than as lifetime tier points.
  4. If that next tier year ends before 8 July 2022, you only need 75% of the usual number of tier points to requalify or upgrade.
* If you were on course to be downgraded on 30 June or 31 July 2020 due to missing a threshold, you need to base the extension on the lower status (for example, if you didn't make Gold, you'd soft land to Silver and the extension would be based on this). It should only be these people who didn't receive an email, although BA's mailing lists are not always the most reliable.

Examples (used Gold as the status but the same rules apply to all tiers):

Person A qualified for/retained Gold when their tier year ended on 8 June 2020:
  • Their current status year is until 8 June 2021, so their Gold will be renewed until 8 June 2022 (expiring end July 2022), regardless of whether they earn enough tier points in their 2020-2021 tier year.
  • From 9 June 2021, they will need to earn 75% of the required tier points to retain Gold after June 2022. For the following tier year they will need to earn 100% of the required tier points.
  • Any tier points earned before 9 June 2021 are only of use (other than as lifetime tier points) if they would lead to a tier upgrade to Gold Guest List (only 75% of usual points needed) as they will be reset to zero on that day and the member will retain Gold regardless.
Person B has a tier year end of 8 January and is currently a Gold member:
  • Their current status year is until 8 January 2021, so their Gold will be renewed until 8 January 2022 (expiring end February 2022), regardless of whether they earn enough tier points in their 2020-2021 tier year.
  • From 9 January 2021, they will need to earn 75% of the required tier points to retain Gold after January 2022. For the following tier year they will need to earn 100% of the required tier points.
  • Any tier points earned before 9 January 2021 are only of use (other than as lifetime tier points) if they would lead to a tier upgrade to Gold Guest List (only 75% of usual points needed) as they will be reset to zero on that day and the member will retain Gold regardless. This essentially means that those who have already met the criteria for Gold for their next membership year by the time of the announcement on 11 June 2020, or will have before 9 Jan 2021 when their tier points will be reset to zero, don't really benefit from the exceptional extension.
Person C has a tier year end of 8 July and is currently a Gold member:
  • Their current status year is until 8 July 2020, so their Gold will be renewed until 8 July 2021 (expiring end August 2021) regardless of whether they earn enough tier points in their 2019-2020 tier year. .
  • From 9 July 2020, they will need to earn 75% of the required tier points to retain Gold after July 2021. For the following tier year they will need to earn 100% of the required tier points.
  • Any tier points earned before 9 July 2020 are only of use (other than as lifetime tier points) if they would lead to a tier upgrade to Gold Guest List (only 75% of usual points needed) as they will be reset to zero on that day and the member will retain Gold regardless. This essentially means that those who have already met the criteria for Gold for their next membership year by the time of the announcement on 11 June 2020, or will have before 9 July 2020 when their tier points will be reset to zero, don't really benefit from the exceptional extension.
Person D has a tier year end of 8 November and is currently a Gold member:
  • Their current status year is until 8 November 2020, so their Gold will be renewed until 8 November 2021 (expiring end December 2021), regardless of whether they earn enough tier points in their 2019-2020 tier year.
  • From 9 November 2020, they will need to earn 75% of the required TPs to retain Gold after November 2021. For the following tier year they will need to earn 100% of the required tier points.
  • Any tier points earned before 9 November 2020 are only of use (other than as lifetime tier points) if they would lead to a tier upgrade to Gold Guest List (only 75% of usual points needed) as they will be reset to zero on that day and the member will retain Gold regardless. This essentially means that those who have already met the criteria for Gold for their next membership year by the time of the announcement on 11 June 2020, or will have before 9 November 2020 when their tier points will be reset to zero, don't really benefit from the exceptional extension.
