I took a look at YYC-YYZ-xxx with a couple of US destinations, e.g. LGA and ATL. The good news is that the website does seem to reflect this new policy, so you no longer have to take a redeye or take the last flight in and first flight out (which has sometimes meant getting in at 1-1:30AM and leaving around 6-6:30AM) to avoid breaking the fare.
Unfortunately it looks like the threshold for YYZ collecting its full AIF (vs the $4 connecting AIF) and for the government to collect a second dollop of ATSC is still 4 hours, so if you book, say, YYC-YYZ-LGA with an 8-hour overnight, it will cost about $36 more (assuming same base fare). But that's a price I'd be willing to pay a lot of the time.
