A family member's return UA revenue ticket was cancelled due to the covid-19 cancellations.
Ticket purchased on Feb 14, 2020, departure flown on Feb 23, 2020 and return was supposed to be Apr 3, 2020 (which was cancelled). I'm getting conflicting answers from UA ticketing agents in terms of the unused portion of the ticket (return flight). Some say only 6 months validity, some says 1 year from date of ticket purchase. They mentioned no change fees as of till June 30 (as of now) but will have to pay the price difference. Just wanted to know when is the last day the family member can fly back?

The answer is in the fare rules for the particularily ticket. These are not easy to read and can be found by going to the reservation and looking for "fare rules"
Just below the itin, you will see

Then look Penalties section and see if the following is included
CHANGE TO OTHER THAN 1ST TKD FLIGHT COUPON
--
TICKETED RESERVATIONS NOT BEING USED ARE
TO BE CANCELLED PRIOR TO ORIGINAL SCHEDULED
FLIGHT OR TICKET HAS NO VALUE IF NO SHOW
--
RETURN RESERVATIONS MAYBE SCHEDULED
ANYTIME WITHIN TICKET VALIDITY

TICKET VALIDITY OF A PARTIALLY USED TICKET /

Will move this post to a recent discussion about changing the return date of a ticket after flying the first segment.
In that discussion, I had a similar understanding as the agents are telling you but that appears to be the old practice.
