As my son is US citizen, he is allowed to enter into US from Europe, with his parents. So i and my wife are eligible to enter USA. I have called and confirmed with Customs and Border protection Services (CBP) of USA.
This is largely irrelevant what is told you on the phone. What matters is whether you can convince the airline at check-in and gate to let you and your family member to board the flight.
