Probably they will just cancel and not automatically offer you an alternative via another entry point in the US - it doesn't limit your options either way though.

I don't really want to do this trip now. But if I must, I would be better off going TATL on AA rather than BA.
Yes you can. However, you get one shot at the involuntary change so once you have done your change any further changes/cancellations will be according to the fare rules.
