The return will be refared as a return of the RT. How much the fare will change will depend of the fare structure and available fare classes. Assuming they will be similar is an assumption I would not make.
And you still have the issue of travel within 12 months of purchase. As tickets can only be booked 11 months in the future, this just provide 1 extension.
