A couple of things
-- the present waivers are waiving the change fees but not fare changes. So whenever you make the change, no fee or not, the fare will be recalculated for a voluntary change.
-- it is generally a better idea to wait until the outbound has been flown to make a change of the return. So you are only refaring the return, not both. The return will be refared as a return of the RT. How much the fare will change will depend of the fare structure and available fare classes. Assuming they will be similar is an assumption I would not make.
And you still have the issue of travel within 12 months of purchase. As tickets can only be booked 11 months in the future, this just provide 1 extension.
