Pre Covid the last minute flight purchase market from PHX>SAN,SNA,LAX,SFO well basically anywhere in California this would make sense if you needed to go away for the weekends on AA. You could save money flying Southwest but even they were getting pricey as recent as last year
My wife used to have to fly intra-CA on 1 or 2 day notice a lot and usually paid $400-500+ RT on Southwest. I think they actually get a lot of business travelers since they have (had?) more departure time options than other carriers.
