Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. wireless company, said on Wednesday it was expanding its high-speed data service to all or part of 17 cities, under a $1 billion upgrade aimed at increasing customer spending on its services.
In addition to Washington, San Diego and Las Vegas, Verizon's service will now be available in these markets: Atlanta, Austin, Texas, Baltimore, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, Tampa and West Palm Beach in Florida, as well as New York and Los Angeles.
Verizon will also offer the service in airports in Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Arizona.
BroadbandAccess currently works only with special computer cards, and is priced at about $80 per month for unlimited usage. The company said handsets designed for the EV-DO technology used in the service would be available next year.
