I've always gotten an e-mail... however, it's usually a few weeks after after my flights are changed. I've been fortunate enough to discover any schedule changes by checking my itinerary on aa.com. I've then gotten the e-mail notifying me of schedule changes as little as a few days before the flight, when the change actually occurred weeks before.
