If you want a stranger one, I recently refurbished one of our Thinkpads (T520 IIRC) and couldn't get the damn thing to run the quad core CPU faster than .8GHz. Tried multiple 130w power supplies, nothing. Lo and behold, when I put a battery in the system, the CPU came up to full power. It didn't matter whether the battery was dead/useless or good. The laptop just refused to come up to full steam without one physically installed.
