Would you drive cross country right now or fly?

We are in North Carolina. Husband's mother is in southern California. He is talking about driving there as getting on a plane right now is not something he wants to do. I'm trying to convince to wait, maybe do it together. The problem I see is that driving, everything is drive thru so you're stuck with fast food restaurants, instead of visiting something interesting. I'm guessing if a restaurant is drive through only that bathroom is closed too. And I suppose some hotels/motels along the way might be closed?

I checked schedules for flights. Right now options are limited. Much better in a few months. Of course that could change. I thought I could put us in first class on a direct flight to minimize contact with other people.

Any thoughts?
