Joke aside, I do not see the point really. The amounts in question will be quite small and make no difference for Amex, but it can be a real inconvenience for us if we NEED something and can only pay with Visa or cash....
I was concerned we would need to pay for hospital bills with Amex.
Oh, one more little trick to be careful of that I noticed....
Let's say you purchase something in the US for $100. Amex registers that at say 0,90€ PLUS 2.8% commission.
On the claim form it asks you to list the amount you paid in the local currency. It reimburses you again at the local currency less a commission amount. Why should I be subsidizing my claim with an extra 6% (way more than the cost of that insurance... which is closer to 3%)
So to not let them take their ~5.6% commission I started listing the amounts in Euro, regardless of the currency of purchase.
Now they pay the whole amount in its entirety. ;-) Of course if the Euro has devalued more than 6% since that time etc I guess you could play the gamble the other way. ;-)
