Joke aside, I do not see the point really. The amounts in question will be quite small and make no difference for Amex, but it can be a real inconvenience for us if we NEED something and can only pay with Visa or cash....

I was concerned we would need to pay for hospital bills with Amex.
That's exactly the problem I had on one trip where I had 400€ of expenses in a country where Amex wasn't widely accepted. They only reimbursed 220€.

I then submitted the other 180€ to Lufthansa, who promptly paid the expenses. Then after I learned that Axa contacted Lufthansa... (they audit almost every claim 30 days after they close it- they contact the airline to make sure they didn't pay anything). Lufthansa said yes, I had received compensation so Axa sent me a nasty letter saying that I was violating their policy for me by seeking compensation from the airline AND the insurance company. I wrote them back and told them (not in these exact words) that their response was completely stupid because I wasn't asking for the same amount-- I was asking for the DIFFERENCE because their idiotic policy only covered amounts paid with an Amex.

Moral of the story they are very annoying.

I am not sure that the paying with an Amex would be necessary for medical expenses but who knows. This is the clause that *now* is in bold... before it was in small type........

"Tous les frais de transport, rafraîchissement, logement ainsi que l’achat ou la location d’articles de première nécessité doivent être payés par carte American Express lors du Voyage. Si la carte American Express n’est pas acceptée comme moyen de paiement pour les achats d’urgence, l’indemnisation de l’Assureur sera limitée à 50 % des montants ci-dessus à la condition de lui fournir les originaux des justificatifs de paiement.
