Also - here is the deal - if people here were so deliberate about defrauding United, they would have ensured their mileage balance was 0 and they would have redeemed their miles right away - in that case locking an account would mean nothing to the member. They can start flying another airline. Or open an account on another star alliance member. That would be real way to truly defraud an airline and you would do it in a deliberate way.
The people impacted the most are the ones who didn't think this was a big deal (everyone's doing it and United doesn't seem to care), had a chunky mileage balance and now feel that their earnings have been taken away (almost similar to the bank locking your access because you used your ATM outside of network or similar trivial reason). The GPU's sold were assigned to us - its not that we tried to sell some other members GPUs. Additionally, expiring GPU's method was a flaw that United acknowledged and fixed with Points Plus.
