You're right. Now that UA flies non stops from the east and west coast, into the flagship city of nearly every *A partner, it only needs the partner for the final leg connection. UA has worked hard to build the global network. Now they're going to flex that power to encourage you to fly their network.
Is that still the case going forward? With the anticipated level of travelling being much lower even post-COVID19, I can't imagine UA flying into the "flagship city" of all of its partners. UA is bleeding cash and if the demand isn't there, I fully expect them to cut routes until the demand goes back up; whenever that will be.
