I've been going back and forth with this hotel while Barclays has been processing the chargeback and it'd be hilarious if there wasn't $850 on the line. They still refuse to refund the stay (not surprising), but two other things of note:
- This hotel exclusively offers non-refundable rates. You can't book a refundable rate, at least you can't through their website or through an OTA.
- They've jacked up their rates significantly for future dates from what we originally paid. Meaning, anyone with a voucher (which appears to be all of their guests, see #1 above) is going to have to shorten their stay or get charged more per night.
I am really surprised that EU protections aren't stronger with respect to hotel reservations. I'm writing this off as a loss at this point if the chargeback does not go through.
