When you look closely the casual name for it shouldn't be tulip, but shield. It was an evolution of the 50s era UA shield that morphed a U into the shield - see the images of the old shield logos and it's clear where the inspiration came. Same slant, same proportions.

It picked up the associations the general public had with the prior UA legacy - too big tone deaf airline - and carried the torch

I never cared much for the CO / globe logo - much preferred the UA logo, but am aware enough to know the UA logo built up a reputation of mediocrity at best with joe public.
