The “United Airlines” was mostly washed/scuffed off, it had mismatched engine cowlings and there was dirt/gunk all over the fuselage from nose to tail. I took said 757 LGA-ORD and right before takeoff the captain welcomed us to the “friendly skies” and apologized for the look of the aircraft and said he was “embarrassed” to be in command of such and “awful” looking aircraft.

Oh brother - that's one freaking example. CO had tail chippings and faded logos on their planes around the same time as well. UA had 98 of those bad boys at the time.
