If you can use the free night award with minimal hassle, then it may at least help you break even on the AF. The Amex offers would just be bonus. I wonder if Amex is losing money on the regular Bonvoy cards as there have been very few reports of retention offers. It seems like Amex would rather want you to close the account then throw you a bone to keep it open for another year.
