I have made Select status the last two years almost all on long distance trains. I have the time to take the train now and after 15 years of traveling for work the airport isn't exciting anymore. Amtrak is a more relaxing way to travel. However, RPA membership gets me 10% off on basic fares anyway, so the benefits of Select are limited to extra points, and a few business class upgrades, which aren't available on most of the long-haul trains.
COVID19 has put everything in limbo, of course, but the "flexible dining" downgrades have reduced my Amtrak use. I'm not going to eat packaged food for a 2 day trip. Still, I would expect AA (and DL and UA) to eliminate or significantly downgrade meals in F because of COVID19 and keep them downgraded because of "COVID19" and "it's unsustainable" similar to the way they used "9-11" and "TSA regulations" to downgrade service in the 2000's and then keep them downgraded when financials improve to allow for bigger profits and stock buybacks. And many long haul non-stop routes (in favor of a connection) will be eliminated by all airlines because of COVID19.
It just looks like a overall downgrading of the travel experience on all modes for the next couple of years. I understand it's unavoidable. Food service in all areas (not just travel) will have to be reevaluated. Amtrak, if you have the time, may still be the best choice. Daze
