I can't speak to the range discrepancy, but don't worry about it. A few years ago I was flying YYC-IAH on one of these on a weekly basis, and the GC distance on that is 1748 miles. Occasionally there would be an strong head wind that would require a tech stop, but it was rare. I wouldn't be concerned about this from a safety perspective. In some ways, I prefer the CRJ900 to some other aircraft. In Y I found the pitch to be decent and I prefer 2x2 to 3x3 seating.
