Best bet is to renew with same provider to have continuous cover.
I purchased my renewal on 12/3/20, and according to Virgin Money's own website right now, they have categorised Covid-19 as a known event from 13/3, so hopefully I'm covered for my unrecoverable expenses. I do believe it would be fairly unethical for insurance companies to not pay out because your renewal date is after the pandemic broke out. But still expect them to try every trick in the book that they can.
