If it is AA, then there isn't much point since there are no mileage accruals for transatlantic

If he has the back page of the ticket and the full flight information, QF will likely help him out if he contacts them. I had a lost BP once and, although it took a while, they did get it credited after I sent them a copy of the ticket.

Failing that, credit it to a BA account rather than lose it. 11,700 miles is not worth losing.
