I regularly flew to Los Angeles in the 89-91 period and always tried to get a seat on the upper deck in economy. It was a smaller cabin and the service level was very good. One night flight I couldn't sleep (possibly because the cc member was filling me full of free champagne as it was my birthday) and got to go into the cockpit (in the days before 9/11 obviously). These were the days with 3 crew, with the flight engineer showing me how they transferred fuel from wing to centre tanks.
The Los Angeles BA flight also had the benefit of a free helicopter ride down to John Wayne Airport from LAX - even for those in economy. Great fun zooming along the So Cal beaches.
