When I flew on Qantas 747s in the 1980s, I remember that the smoking seats were on the left side of the aircraft.

I often flew on BA's 747-200s between SEA and London into the late 1990s, and often snagged an economy seat on the upper deck. On one return to SEA on Thanksgiving Day, the aircraft was about half-full, and I had a row of seats to myself.
