I think the "standard" procedure (pre-Corona virus days) is that if you cancel a partially used award on the AS website, you won't get any of your miles back. Given the circumstances, if you have an agent cancel over the phone, you may get your miles back. I cancelled the second half of 27.5K award (mix of AS/AA) and got all 27.5K miles back (same day I cancelled if I remember correctly).
