I just called the CP desk to ask some questions about the new "day of departure" procedure. According to the person with whom I spoke, what matters is the time you check in at the airport on the day of departure. Web check-in 24 hours in advance won't move you up in the queue, nor will calling reservations early on the day of departure. Of course, all of this will need to be checked empirically.
