The best approach for me may be to snare some UA upgrades in NA -- while I am traveling on an AC codeshare ticket, looks like (if I read this correct) they can be used at the gate for Luthansa flights. The European * upgrades are an intriguing possibility, but I have no idea where to find these (a situation probably shared by many others!)
