It is not for the consumer to track financial transactions between Orbitz & AA. The card issuer (bank) will credit the consumer and the account of the merchant vendor will be debited. It is then between the merchant vendor and carrier to figure out who holds the funds. That is a commercial issue which has nothing to do with the consumer and in which the consumer will not be involved.
But if the airline is willing to address the refund, the refund will be handled a lot faster than charegback especially with American. I had four AA tickets refunded back within 5 business days from submission during the last 2 weeks. Two were booked with Orbitz and the other two were award tickets. The refund request for Orbitz tickets were submitted with AA directly.
Chargeback will likely take a minimum of 20 days if not longer given the amount of chargeback activity gong on now.
