It's still go back American Airlines as Orbitz had long remitted the ticket sales to AA thru ARC. Orbitz doesn't have the money.
Which is why chargeback is the route to pursue.

It is not for the consumer to track financial transactions between Orbitz & AA. The card issuer (bank) will credit the consumer and the account of the merchant vendor will be debited. It is then between the merchant vendor and carrier to figure out who holds the funds. That is a commercial issue which has nothing to do with the consumer and in which the consumer will not be involved.
