If your flight were to be cancelled by AA and you want a refund, it might be possible to submit the refund request on aa.com directly.

I had a non-stop flight turned into a connection thru PHL but then ultimately all segments were cancelled. Orbitz outright said they can only do a change but not a refund for AA and to go to AA for a refund. I went to AA refund site, initiated a refund without speaking to anybody. Refund posted in under 5 days.

Same with IB ticket. Orbitz said only change and go to airline for refund. Called IB and they put in the refund request without hassle.

Same with AC ticket. Couldn't reach Travelocity but needed to cancel before flight departure. Called AC up and they took over the PNR and said to call them directly to use the ticket when ready instead of calling Travelocity..

Airline can take over the PNR anytime especially on published fares. General policy is not to until day of departure.
