Choice?
Perhaps it has something to do with choice. Lots of you worry about spending time with your families or charging the client. I run my own business and I need choice. I can fly up to 6 long haul sectors a week. I can work on a day flight to prepare for the next day. I can sleep on a night flight to get ready for a whole day event. I chose the aircraft departure time that suits me, my body and my work in the best compromise situation of them all.
A day out of the office working at the computer is fine, they are bound to be in a different time zone from me anyway so as long as I can stuff it down the electronic ether on landing, who cares?
What nobody seems to have picked up is the delight of the non-Christian week as well. Monday to Friday is a western thing. Some of us are allowed to work all week M to F and then fly to the Gulf for a Saturday morning arrival, work for a couple of days over there and then fly back to Australia/UK and start again.
When working the Kangaroo route, I fly at weekends to free up the working week. If I am lucky and get out of Canberra early enough on a Friday then I stand a chance of flying out long haul but it usually ends up Saturday.
One thing is certain, choice is a good thing. If I need to get LON to SYD quickly, then having to wait until 2200 at night is not good for customer response. If I get QF 32 then I can get working on the problem in the evening after landing and have most of the answer ready for the next day.
And for those of you wondering, the worst case scenario is that the airfares expenditure is 5 times my salary. I tried the Y thing up to four nights a week but that didn't work after a couple of months.
