You are correct about the wage. And that is what the economy determines their job is worth. If they want to make more, they get promoted or go to school part time to get ahead in life... Different occupations pay different amounts. They work there because as one person in the article said its good money (for their situation).
Also worst, many situations have shown unintended consequences. 1. Lets say you uo the pay to $16. Many more qualified people will take the job since it pays better, meaning the lesser qualified have to settle for worse jobs and end up with less money. 2. The hotel may have 10 people at $13.50 an house. Now they'll have 9 at $16. That one person is out of luck while the other 9 are more comfortable.
Getting back to the topic, bottom line as a hotel customer I just dont want to have to pay extra costs because of a bad labor deal. Either the hotel co's shareholders pay the cost or its customers if theres a bad labor deal..
