I've never envisioned MNL as a high yielding route, so I've never understood why DL wanted to keep it as the sole intraAsia route. Surely SIN, PUS, HKG, TPE, and other destinations are much more business oriented and command higher fares. Even BKK and KUL should do better than MNL.
I’m completely speculating but the US has been rebuilding its military presence in the Philippines in the last few years, so it may make some sense for DL to serve it and capture the government traffic. While codeshares can be used to skirt the “Fly America” act, having its own metal present may help land USG/DOD traffic via the GSA contract awards.
