If they wanted to return they did get near 2 weeks notice by the FCO and more than a week's notice that the SA Government was taking action and flight options were shutting down. They've had 3 days notice of the full lockdown. However, I am aware that some visitors, like those who had arrived in the last 14 days from high-risk countries like the UK were in quarantine and didn't make it out, are now being supported by the High Commission. But even if you are in quarantine, you were allowed to return home as 'essential travel'.
But they did only give 36 hours notice of the actual closure which wasn’t so cool.
