Assuming the price in points hasn't changed you could just cancel your points booking and make a new one using the cert. If the price in points has changed (for example if you booked using 35K points but now the price is 40K points and you're trying to use a 35K certificate) I think technically you are not supposed to be able to use the certificate regardless, but I'm not sure if you might get a phone agent who was willing/able to go around that.
The point level did go up, that's why I made the reservations using points before the change. Is it not allowed to swap in a cert on those reservations now? I thought I have read about this workaround right around the time when category change was about to go into effect.
