Except that those wide-open grasslands are actually in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the southeastern corner of the Serengeti. Most of the Serengeti consists of woodland of varying density, superficially not really that different from the western (granite) side of Kruger. Manyara and Tarangire are not grassland reserves either.
As for air conditioning, I don't like it, and do not use it. It's perfectly possible to do without, even in the austral summer.
