So if I click "CANCEL flight" I have 12 months from original ticket issue date to use it or request refund at end of it?

This is likely what the agent was referring to
International travel outside of the U.S. of greater than 6 hours or canceled flight customers can:
-Retain travel credit for 12 months from the time of purchase.
-If the travel credit is not used, customers may request a refund to their original form-of-payment at the end of that 12-month period. Details on how to request the refund to be provided soon.
