Not sure why it wouldn't be possible? In the case that I mentioned, it wasn't a UA lounge that I was using, but another *A partner lounge.

It's pretty rare that I find myself in the same scenario (not crediting *A flight to UA), but will try that in future if I find myself in a similar situation. The one time that I did it before was not to get into a SQ lounge, but for another *A carrier lounge. And some of those lounges have automated gates where you scan your boarding pass (some NZ & SK lounges come to mind), so I'd have to call over one of the attendants if my UA*G FF# wasn't on the boarding pass. But not a big deal, I suppose.
