I think you didn't take it far enough. Yes the "Use Points/Certificate" button will be checked off. Then you scroll down and click on UPDATE as if you are making a new selection (while choosing the same room type or a different one since you're cancelling anyhow) and the options of Points or Certificate will be listed separately as ways to pay.
Anyhow, sounds like it all worked out for you!
