I'll keep checking on her DEN connections and if both are cancelled I'll get a room for her at IAD, ready and waiting. She's lugging 2 oversized suitcases (many heavy books=exhausted grad student).
I would wait until she arrives into IAD and no connecting flight before I book a hotel room. Hotel occupancy is so low now that availability is not the issue. This way you don't have to deal with canceling, just in case. You can check on options.
UA.com is still selling IAD-DEN on both evening flights for Mar. 23.
