first flight on Midwest -- miles advice please

Hi All.

I will be flying Midwest Express for the first time next week (San Francisco-Kansas City). Any tips on joining the program, maximizing sign up and mile accumulation, promotions, etc? Honestly, I don't think I'll be flying Midwest a lot, but no reason to let a flight go to waste.

Also, I see that American is a partner. Can I credit my flight to my AA account number?
