I have tickets purchased in early January 2020 for May 4-18 travel to Hawai'i. One ticket was purchased using the Companion fare; the companion fare expires in mid-June 2020. I need to cancel (and the governor of Hawai'i has asked for no visitors from out of state through April 30, so that's a no-brainer).

I'm trying to figure out the "best" way to deal with this: My travel was purchased before Feb. 28 for travel *after* April 30 so, according to the statements on COVID cancellations, it doesn't qualify for anything other than the $125 per ticket recharge option (which is *more* than the Companion fare was). Do I call and ask for the opportunity to cancel (and put in MyWallet?) and then save the confirmation for the original (now cancelled) trip and the Companion fare will still be valid for use after it expires in June 2020?, What is the "language" to use to make this happen? I apologize for not being able to figure this out--after four years of having the AA card, I've never even *used* the companion fare before this... (yes, I know...)

Or do I wait until the AA policy extends beyond the current April 30 flight--or until, perhaps, Alaska cancels the flight on its own??? Help!
